Marina Bay Sands opened in 2010, bringing a hotel, convention and exhibition facilities, theatres, entertainment venues, restaurants and retail to Singapore’s Marina Bay. The 55-story towers are inclined in the lower sections, which presented a challenge when it came to the elevator shafts. Additionally, the roof architecture prevented the use of standard elevator machine rooms. KONE solved the problem by using machine room-less elevators powered by energy-efficient KONE EcoDisc® hoisting machines.
“For KONE, the Marina Bay Sands project is a showcase of both flexibility and exactness. The elevators range from luxurious high-end solutions to sturdy freight elevators,” says Anthony Tan, Managing Director, KONE Singapore.
As is often the case on massive construction sites, a large number of workers needed to move around smoothly and efficiently. Our innovative, state-of-the-art KONE JumpLift construction-time elevator solution rose to the challenge and enabled a faster and safer construction process.
“KONE JumpLift transported workers efficiently upwards as the project progressed – something that would otherwise have taken increasing amounts of time the higher the towers rose,” Tan said. “The construction schedules were aggressive, and this solution was both safe and flexible.”
In September 2013, Marina Bay Sands became our first customer to install KONE UltraRope™, our new, super-light and durable elevator hoisting technology. The ropes were installed in a passenger elevator that travels from the ground floor to floors 34-57, or 195 meters, in Tower 3 of the hotel. In upgrading the steel elevator hoisting ropes to KONE UltraRope for one of its elevators, the resort has made a further commitment into energy efficiency and smoother people flow.
“Marina Bay Sands is a pioneer in adopting state-of-the-art technology and of smart building, and it is very fitting that our first KONE UltraRope installation was made here," Tan said.
